Lindsay Sloper Piano Teacher London

This photo was possibly taken in the 1860s judging by the style of dress, ‘Miriam’ the Young Pianist, Pupil of Mr Lindsay Sloper.

There are a couple of articles in the British Newspaper archive that write about Miriam, a student of Mr Lindsay Sloper. There is considerable information available on Lindsay Sloper.

The following is a little information about his family from a couple of family history websites.

Edmund Hugh Lindsay Sloper was baptised on the 4th October 1827 and was born on the 14th June 1826.

On the 12th October 1847 Lindsay Sloper married Helen Mary Batchelor at St John’s Church, Paddington.

In the 1851 Census, Lindsay Sloper is living with his father, wife and one year old daughter, Emily A Sloper. They are living in Paddington, his father is a Pensioner of the East India Company and Lindsay Sloper is listed as being 24 years of age, a Professor of Pianoforte and Music. They have two servants living with them.

The 1861 Census shows the family (minus his father) living in Paddington, they have five children and four servants living with them Lindsay Sloper is a Professor of Music. His father had died in 1860.

By the 1871 Census Lindsay Sloper is living in Hampstead with his wife and five children, he is a Professor of Music and there are two servants living with them. His wife, Helen Mary Sloper (nee Batchelor) died in November 1880.

In the 1881 Census two of his daughters are living in a boarding house in Westminster, Lindsay Sloper is living in Marylebone. He is a Professor of Music. Living with him are Emily Kemp aged 22 years old, his housekeeper and her sister, 16-year-old Ellen who is visiting. He married Emily Kemp later in 1881.

Lindsay Sloper died on 3rd July 1887. He is buried in the Hillingdon and Uxbridge Cemetery.

Probate for his will was granted on 22nd July 1887, his personal estate is £80 4s 3d, he was a Music Composer and he was from 63 York Terrace, Regents Terrace.
