Moore and Moore pianos

1809 John Moore, son of James and Margaret Moore, is baptised on the 22nd October 1809 at Chipstead, Surrey. He was born on the 24th September 1809.

1813 Henry Moore, son of James and Margaret Moore of Chipstead Bottom is baptised on the 29th August at Chipstead, Surrey. James is a schoolmaster.

1837 On the 15th August 1837 John Moore, over the age of 21 years old, a bachelor, a piano maker and Elizabeth Morris, a widow are married at the St Pancras Church, Middlesex, London. His father James was a school master.

1851 John Moore, aged 42 years old, a master pianoforte employing 4 men is living with his wife Elizabeth age 52 years old and their daughter, Margaret aged 12 years old.

Henry Moore, aged 37 years old, a pianoforte maker and his wife Frances aged 30 years old are living with their three children in St Johns, Hackney, London. Their three children are Henry aged 4, Matilda aged 2 and Francis W aged 1.

1861 Henry Moore, aged 47 years old, pianoforte manufacturer and his wife Frances aged 40 years old are living at 169 Grange Cottages, Hackney. They have two children living with them, Matilda aged 12 years old and Ernest aged 7 years old.

Francis William Moore aged 11 years old, is living in a school.

John Moore, aged 51 years old, a pianoforte maker employing 30 men and 5 boys is living with his wife Elizabeth aged 62 years old and their 22 year old daughter, Margaret in Norwood, London.

1871 John Moore aged 61 years old, now a widower is living at The Parks, Croydon. He is working as a piano manufacturer employing 42 men and 4 boys at 104 Bishopgate St.

Henry Moore, aged 57 years old, his wife Frances aged 50 years old and their three children, Henry 24, Matilda 22, Francis 21 and Ernest 17 are living at Park Hill Rise, Croydon. All of the sons are assisting in the business.

1881 In this Census Henry Moore aged 67 years old, his wife Frances aged 60 years and two of their children are living at 301 Park Hill Rise, Croydon. Henry is working as a piano maker.

John Moore is living at 221 Park Hill Road with his married daughter. He is aged 71 years old and is working as a piano maker.

1891 Henry Moore aged 77 years old and his wife Frances aged 70 years old are living at 1 Park Hill Rise, Croydon. Henry is working as a piano manufacturer, and one of his sons who is living with him is working in the business too. Their daughter Matilda is living at home.

1892 John Moore, aged 83 years old of Whitburn Vale, Chest is buried on the 9th December 1892 at the Parish of Churt, Surrey.

1896 Moore Henry of 104 and 105 Bishop-gate London and of Maythorne, Addiscombe, Croydon, Surrey pianoforte manufacture died 22 Janaury 1896 at Maythorne. Probate London 19 February to Henry Keatley Moore pianoforte maker. Effects £38012 18s 3d.

In the Globe, dated the 25th January 1896 there is a death notice for Henry Moore. ‘On the 22nd inst, in his 83rd year, of Maythorne, Addiscombe, Croydon, Senior Partner and Founder (1838) of the Firm of Moore and Moore Pianoforte Makers of 104 and 105 Bishopgate-street Within, E.C.

The Chelmsford Chronicle of 31st January 1896 states ‘we regret to record the death of Mr Henry Moore, senior partner and founder of the well-known firm of Moore and Moore, pianoforte makers, Bishopgate. Mr Moore, who was in his 83rd year, was one of the oldest pianoforte makers, and was the inventor of the now widely adopted hire-purchase system. He leaves three sons, who carry on the business and one daughter’.

1896 The following is from the 27th January 1896 edition of the Eastern Daily Press. ‘The funeral took place on Saturday, at Abney Park Cemetery, of a prominent man in the musical world in the person of Mr Henry Moore, the founder of the firm of Moore and Moore, the well-known pianoforte manufacturers, Bishopgate. London. Mr Moore, who came from a well-known Norfolk family, was born in 1813 two years before the battle of Waterloo, and in 1838, with his brother John, established the business in Bishopgate which achieved much success. On the death of his brother Mr Henry Moore carried on the business until his death. He was a smart man of business, a thorough musician, and the founder of the “Hire Purchase System” which has taken hold in commercial dealings. He was much esteemed by his employees, who attended the funeral. He was ardent Radical in politics, and his speeches at political gatherings were noted for their clearness and vigour. We may add that the deceased was 83 at the time of his death which occurred at Maythorne, Addicombe. For many years the deceased was a worshipper at South Place Chapel, Finsbury. His death was peaceful, the last words addressed to his daughter being “Do thy duty, tide what may”.

1911 In this Census Henry Keatley Moore aged 64 years, his wife Elizabeth aged 59 years and five of their seven children are living in Chipstead, Croydon. Henry is a pianoforte manufacturer and his son, Henry Payne Moore is a manager in the business. One of the daughters is a teacher of singing.

1937 In the Croydon Times on the 18th August 1937 there is a death notice for Henry Keatley Moore, B.A., MusBac, J.P. aged 91 years old. He died at the Croydon Nursing Home, his address was 4 Morland Road, Croydon. He was the Chairman of Moore and Moore Pianos Ltd.
