This tutor book, written by Walter Rolfe which was published in New Zealand by Charles Begg and Co. in 1931, promoted a βnewβ way of teaching beginning piano pupils. The copy that I own has been well-used as there a number of pencil notes written in by the teacher. She exhorts the pupil to use round fingers, to lift both hands off together at the end of the piece, to count out loud, to use accents on some occasions, to count with accents on the 1 in triple time for example, keeping chords light and to acknowledge rests; all aspects teachers are still reinforcing today.
